Yellowstone Lapboook

We have a trip to Yellowstone coming up soon so I wanted Claire to make a Yellowstone lapbook.  I couldn't find one anywhere so I just made my own.  I used the printable blank lapbook templates from homeschoolshare.com.  We had some of Claire's friends over and made an afternoon out of it.  I think the books turned out well.  I even made my very first power point presentation!  I think that worked very well....I had it on the TV and the kids could see everything really well and copy things really well.  And I didn't have to spell anything for anyone!!

We took a break in between folders and made Indian Fry Bread from this recipe.

 

We talked about the different kind of rocks in Yellowstone.  I showed the kids examples of the three different kinds of rocks and erupted our own volcano when we were talking about igneous rocks.  I don't have a picture of that, but the kids really enjoyed it.  It was just the standard baking soda and vinegar volcano.  We also made our own geysers with Mentos and Diet Coke.  Three groups did the experiment, but this is the best picture I got of any of them.

 



 

Needless to say, the kids REALLY enjoyed this experiment!

 

It was a fun day and I can't wait to go to Yellowstone and see it in person!

My 4 year old niece is coming to visit this week so we are going to introduce her to lapbooks. :)
I've printed one of these out for her and my daughter. Since they are different ages, I have different stuff for each one. I also printed out coloring pages for them to color and put on the front. In art class they are going to make a watercolor rainbow and put that in there as well.
If you've never tried lapbooks check it out. They are a fun way to learn! I even make my own. You can also add things to customize it for your child.

I use coloring pages and activities that I find online to add to the lapbooks sometime. Since my niece is only 4 I got some "trace the letter" coloring pages for her. I just saved the coloring page and then inserted it into Word and changed its size to fit in the lapbook.

I'll post pictures of them when the kids finish them so you can see how they turned out.

Homeschool Talk: Lapbooks

I had heard many homeschoolers talk about lapbooks, but I had never done one. They seemed neat, but I wasn't quite sure how to put them together. Well, I just attended a class on how to do them. Thanks to my friend Lynda
(The Adventures of A Princess and The Bear) for setting it up! My daughter did the child's class and I did the adult one. Now I'm hooked! She is a very visual learner and likes the coloring, cutting, and gluing involved. Lapbooks fit with her learning style perfectly!

In the child's class she made a Johnny Appleseed lapbook. It is a 2 folder one, most of them are 3 folder. She told me when we got home that she wanted to take another class! She had a lot of fun with it so we will definately be incorporating these into her curriculum.

In the adult class I made an Autumn one. It is not complete. Claire will complete it this month. Her literature unit for this month is Cinderella so the autumn/pumpkin theme of the lapbook will fit in well.
