Claire did it!
We've been using the Sing Spell Read and Write curriculum with Claire. We started the K-1 curriculum last year for Kinder. She had a tough time with some of it so we used it as a 2 yr. program. Yesterday she finished it! Actually, she still has a comprehension test to take, but she did the last workbook page and read the last story in the last reader. There were 17 readers in all. I'm very proud of her. Reading did not come easy for her.
The book was called the Raceway book and she had a racetrack poster to keep track of her progress. Here's the poster...

The last story in the reader was about a class who finished their Raceway book and their teacher threw a party complete with a raceway cake that looked like the chart. So, I decided to make one for Claire. It was very hard decorating a cake as a surprise with her in the house! I also had only about 1 1/2 hrs. to do it in between lunch and Nathan's physical therapy. That's definately the fastest I've ever decorated a cake! Here's my cake...

Claire was very excited and surprised to get it! We called the kids downstairs after dinner and my husband said, "ok, who did it?" Both of them said, "I didn't do it!" They didn't even know what he was talking about, but they weren't about to admit to it! Then, he told them to go sit at the kitchen table. I could hear Claire sitting there saying, "I didn't do it, Nathan, you did!" Always quick to blame her brother! Then I brought out the cake and said, "No, Claire, You did it!" She was so excited. I think she said thank you 3 or 4 times.

When she went to bed last night she told me getting that "fabulous cake" was her favorite part of the day! Hearing that was mine!

Postcard Friendship Friday #47

My mom gave me some Postcards from the Old West Collectors Series. This is one of them. Here is a little summary of what the back of the postcard said:
Judge Roy Bean was known as "The Law West of the Pecos". He tried a gang of horse theives in front of the courthouse saloon in Langtry, TX. He was a saloon keeper and would oftern recess trials to sell liquor to the courtroom. He also once fined a dead man and staged a heavyweight boxing match in the middle of the Rio Grand!

Wordful Wednesday/Wordless Wednesday
This week is field trip week for us. Monday we went to the zoo...

Claire insisted I take a picture of her on every animal statue!

Nathan monkeying around!

I thought this was a really good shot of Claire. She also made me take pictures of her on every rock she climbed up!

Claire made a penguin friend. She named him Ping! She names everything!

Postcard Friendship Friday #46

The Dolphins at the Texas State Aquarium are the big exhibit. Even though we are both from that area, my husband and I have only been to the Aquarium once...and the Dolphins were off exhibit!! So, one day I hope to go back and see them.
Beth at The Best Hearts Are Crunchy is hosting PFF today. Stop by her blog to see more. (If her link doesn't come through here, she's in my sidebar. I've been having issues with Blogger and links lately!)

Links to free History resources
Recently, I've come across some pretty cool classroom resources you can get for free.
First, America The Story of Us is an epic 12-hour television event that tells the extraordinary story of how America was invented.
Go here to request your copy: http://www.history.com/america-the-story-of-us-splash
Go here: http://www.askheritage.org/premium.aspx to request a free pocket size copy of the constitution.
And finally, to sign up for a free WWII technology poster...

Easter Fun!
Hope everyone had a good Easter. Here are a few pics from our weekend. I realized this morning that I never took a picture of both of the kids together like I normally do. Nathan actually wore a suit to church, but it's not in any of my pictures! I guess I'm getting old and forgetful! We did have a family picture taken after church in the Rosary garden though. We'll get those back in a couple of weeks.

Yes, the Easter Bunny even leaves an egg for the cat!

The Last Supper
Today, Holy Thursday, our homeschool group took a field trip to the Christian Arts Museum in Fort Worth. They are home to a life-size wax interpretation of DaVinci's The Last Supper.
It is a truly amazing piece of art. The details were perfect. The hair is real human hair. The room its in is not very large so I did my best to take pictures. I didn't always have the best angle though.
The whole scene...

Jesus, Thomas, James the Greater & Philip...

Matthew, Thaddeus, & Simon the Zealot...

Judas, Peter, & John...(Notice the bag of silver in Judas' hand)
