Our busy Christmas week

We've been busy with Christmas preparations and family fun this week. The kids made gingerbread houses...

We rode a camel...

Had some fun at the museum...

Took the kids to look at Christmas lights...

And celebrated my husband's 40th birthday...

We managed to find 40 candles to put on the cake. Of course, that included 8 crayon shaped candles, 1 baseball glove candle, and, (I didn't realize at the time) 3 trick candles!

There was wax all over his cheesecake! I even found some on the table this morning!
I'd like to thank all my readers and followers for reading.
Its always great to make new bloggy friends!
Merry Christmas from our Gingerbread house to yours!

Wordful Wednesday

Did you see the lunar eclipse earlier this week? We got up to see it. Claire is very into space so she really enjoyed it. Here is my little Backyard Astronomer at 2 am in the backyard with her telescope...

We took pictures of the moon, but none of them came out. It was really cool though. It turned all reddish-orange.

CSN Review

A while back CSN asked me to review a product and generously gave me a gift code for anything I wanted from their massive stores. I had such a hard time deciding what to get that I let my husband pick. I know, very nice of me, right? Well, as you my know, we have a new house, and we need lots of things!

The previous owners left us lots of firewood, but it was just piled on the ground where it could get wet.

My husband really wanted to get it off the ground so we ordered a log rack. Now our firewood looks like this....

Much better, right?

Now for my review of the product... It shipped very quickly (with free shipping, too.) It was easy to put together. As a matter of fact, my 12 year old son was the one who actually put it together. He had no problems. It was lightweight and easy for him to move and carry. It is not the most heavy duty of log racks so if you live in the mountains of Montana or something and have tons of firewood you might need something a little sturdier. We, however, live in a city in Texas and this works just great for us! It would work great in the backyards in most neighborhoods I think.

So, thanks to CSN stores for the wonderful wood rack. You made my husband very happy!
Disclaimer: I was compensated by CSN with a gift code in exchange for my review of their product.

Here's a little sampling of the holiday fun we've been having lately. Claire's visit to Santa...

I've been baking lots of cookies! Here's are the ones I actually took pictures of. I've got more to bake today. I haven't been eating all these though. I've given most of them away.

The blog post I've waited over 3 years to write!

Well, it finally happened...we sold the other house! For those of you who haven't been reading my blog for the last 3 years here is a condensed version of the story...
My husband took a job over an hour away. We decided we'd move a little further North to cut down on his drive time. This was the spring of 2007. We put our house on the market and began looking...and looking...and looking. We found many we liked, but our house never sold. We weren't very happy with our realtor, and had told him we'd want to take the house off the market when we started back to school. He said that would be fine, but when it came time to do it his broker wouldn't let us. Long story short, we humored them by going with another realtor in the office. She wasn't very good either so they finally let us out of the contract.

We didn't know what to do next so we made it for sale by owner for a few months. Then, we found good realtors and relisted it. That's when the bottom totally fell out of the economy. No one could get a loan. We hardly had any showings. So we decided to take it off the market for a while (our school year). During that time we had a lot of time to think. We did not like our neighbors. I could do a whole other post on how awful they were! We just really wanted to move and were tired of living in limbo. So we decided we'd buy when we found what we wanted and then put our house back on the market. This was spring of this year.
One of our friends asked me one day how many homes we had seen since we first started looking. I didn't know exactly, but I had saved all of the description papers from every house we saw. I counted them today. I tried to take out any duplicates. We saw some houses twice, couldn't get into some, etc. But I think the papers I have are a very close representation. Want to guess how many we saw?? Here's a picture of them all.

What was your guess? I counted 101! That's a lot of houses! Our realtor was joking with us after the closing yesterday. She said we should just get together every so often on a Sunday and go look at houses together! We spent many weekends doing that with her over the last 3 years!

Ok...so back to my story. This really is a very condensed version! I know you probably aren't thinking that right now!

We found a house we wanted. Made an offer. It was a short sale so the seller's lender decided to foreclose on them even though we wanted to buy it. So we lost that one. But it was in an area we hadn't looked at before and I fell in love with it. Its not as far north as we wanted, but it cut some time off Chris' drive and the neighborhood was fantastic! (No psycho neighbors!) So, we started looking in that area more. Found another house. Made an offer. Got it. Put our old house on the market. Moved into the new one (August 2010), and still the old one didn't sell. Until yesterday! We are so relieved and happy! We sold it for less than we paid for it 8 years ago, but with this market we decided we were fine with just kind of breaking even.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my old house. We had just outgrown it and could not take living next to inconsiderate, psycho neighbors anymore!

So, thank you to my old house for being a good house for us for 8 years!

And thanks to you, the reader, who made it through this whole long story!

Wordful Wednesday

Our last house was not an easy house to put christmas lights on. It was one of those houses that had to have them on both stories or it just would look bad. BUT the second story was almost impossible to put them on without scaffolding of some sort. It was very dangerous to try so we never put them up. Now, after 8 years, I have lights on my house again!!

And, if you notice, there is even a real Christmas tree on the front porch. That space just needed a tree. I had decided that before we ever even closed on the house!

Hip Homeschool Hop: Christmas Reading

The Homeschool chick is hosting the Hip Homeschool Hop today. Stop by to join in.

Today I was thinking about the Christmas books we will be reading this year.
Aside from 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, which we always read on Christmas Eve, my kids will be reading a few other holiday books this year. I thought I'd share them here.
They're all great.

My son (8th grade) will be reading O. Henry's The Gift of the Magi. This will be a book club book for his bookclub. I'm going to have the kids do a couple of activities to go along with it. One is to make christmas ornaments to give to a loved one. The other is they are going to make each other a snack based on personal preferences. The couple in the book wanted to give each other something that was just what the other needed/wanted. So, the kids are going to have to take into consideration all the tastes and preferences of their friend in order to give them a snack they would most enjoy.
My daughter (2nd grade) will be reading Mooseltoe by Henry Cole. This is a really funny book! We also have Moosetache.

We are also reading Jotham's Journey. It is an advent tale designed to read one section each night of advent. So far, the kids are really enjoying it.

And I'm sure we'll pick up a few more Christmas books next time we are at the library!

What are your favorite Christmas books or stories?

Advent activities

Today is the first day of Advent! We have several advent traditions in our house. We, of course, have an advent calendar and advent wreath. I even made a new one this year...

I used pine cones that we collected on our trip to Arizona this year and leaves from the backyard of our new house. I spray painted them gold. I thought it would be nice to have family memories be part of the advent wreath.

We also make a bed for the baby Jesus. Several years ago my husband and son made a manger. Each advent the kids get to make the hard manger soft by doing good deeds and being good. Each time they do a good deed they get a cotton ball to put in the manger so Jesus will have a soft place to lay his head when he is born. We have colored cotton balls. Nathan's are blue and Claire's are pink. We do this because, in addition to getting a cotton ball when they are good, they also loose one when they are not! You can also use yarn, but cotton balls make for a softer bed. Some good deeds we award cotton balls for include going to church, being extra nice to each other, doing an extra chore, helping someone in need, etc. On Christmas morning Claire places the baby Jesus in the manger atop the cotton balls.

This is the only picture I could locate of her putting baby Jesus in the manger. I know I have better ones somewhere!

I just used a small baby doll for baby Jesus. I took the clothes off and wrapped it in a piece of white material.

About 2 or 3 years ago I bought a book called Jotham's Journey. Its an advent story designed to read a section each night of advent. I always forgot I had the book until advent was half over so we've yet to read it! This year I took it off the bookshelf and placed it next to the wreath so we will be sure to read it tonight!

I also read something the other day about doing the ABCs of Advent. Each day you write down something that starts with the letter of the alphabet. A is for Angel, B is for Bethlehem and so on. I thought that was a really good idea for little ones.

I also found a few good ideas on the web for Advent:

Advent coloring page

The Pro-Life Creche: Fill creche with straw and place in it a 3 mon. preborn baby picture. The second week will be a 5 month pre born. The third week will be a 7 month preborn. The fourth week, an 8 month preborn (or skip this if you don't have class that week. The baby Jesus goes in the cradle when they return to class after Christmas.

The Advent Chain: Make a paper chain with as many links as there are days in Advent. You can use purple and pink for the weeks, corresponding to the weeks on the Advent wreath. Put a good deed on each link. Each day the child opens one link of the chain.

The Blessing Box: Thanksgiving is generally a very busy time for most people. On this day, try to take a few minutes to impress upon your children the generous blessings God has poured out upon Americans. Make a small gold box or decorate an empty box to be used as a bank. Place it in the middle of your kitchen table and once a day for the next 38 days, you will be placing offerings into it. Decide with the children to whom you wish to give this gift. On Epiphany, when according to tradition, the Kings gave their gifts to the Christ Child, you can give the gift away. Each day, the children will be able to reflect upon their blessings. Each day count a different blessing, and put money in the box accordingly. Here are some sample blessings to count:

And this website: http://www.just4kidsmagazine.com/advent1.html has some great ideas based on the ABCs of advent and the 12 days of christmas.

Photo Christmas Cards

Looking for unique, adorable photo Christmas cards? I always am! I recieved a gift package from Mom Magazine and in it were several gifts from their sponsors including a gift code from Paperspring. I used it to get our Christmas cards for this year. Aren't they fabulous?

Of course, I marked out our last name. It didn't come like that! :) I also got matching address labels. Very cool! I LOVE matching stuff!

If you'd like to order your photo Christmas cards from Paperspring they are generously offering my readers a special discount of 20% off Holiday Cards plus free shipping December 1 through December 12 with promotion code HOLIDAY2010. Check them out. They had so many great designs that I had a hard time choosing one! I went with this JOY one and used my favorite picture from our Grand Canyon visit. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Something new they are offering this year is paperlink. If you don't know what that is read on. Here is a little description they sent me...
A Paperlink is a QR (quick response) code printed on the back of an announcement, invitation or holiday card that allows a recipient to access digital content for a richer social stationery experience.

With Paperlinks you can share pictures and videos, rsvp to events, save dates to your calendar, add phone numbers to your contacts, retrieve a map to the event and make comments. The digital content is hosted on a Paperlinks personalized landing page which can be accessed by scanning the Paperlink with the free Paperlinks iphone app or visiting Paperspring and typing a unique code into the Paperlinks widget.

To find out more about Paperlinks visit http://www.paperspring.com/pages/aboutpaperlinks.php.

That would be really cool to put on an invitation!

Wordful Wednesday

I have a folder of photos titled "backyard wildlife". Here are a few pics of what's been creeping around our yard!
We had a big, mean stray cat that kept bothering our cat and trying to come into our house through the kitty door to get her! So, we bought a trap.
We finally caught that cat, but not before we caught 3 possums! Here's the first one we caught.

( Animal control takes them and releases them into a big wooded park in the area.)

Nathan found this big moth on the side of the house one day. I've seen them before, but I don't remember what they are called. He thought it was pretty cool and wanted me to take a picture.

This little guy likes our pool. My husband does not like this little guy in our pool though!

So, we send Claire to catch him whenever he gets in.

(of course, we don't really know if its the same frog or not though!)

Well, that's what's crawling around my yard. What like to call your yard home?

Apple cobbler (Round Robin)

I'm joining Amy's Round Robin today.

I just tried out a new recipe that was really yummy and would be great for the holidays. I found it on http://www.allrecipes.com/ That's a great site! I seem to have an inability to follow recipes exactly. I don't actually use recipes much...I'm more of a make it up as I go kind of cook, but I actually almost followed this one! The only thing I did different was I added cinnamon to the struesel topping. It was really good!

Wordful Wednesday

Our last house had only a couple of young trees so we didn't have very many leaves in the fall. I didn't realize it, but Claire had never had the chance to play in piles of leaves. Well, we have lots of trees at the new house and she is loving all the leaves!

Hip Homeschool Hop: School Name

The homeschool hop is hosted by The Homeschool Chick.

You may remember my past post about choosing a name for our homeschool. Well, after much consideration I decided to name it the All Saints Home Academy. I just couldn't decide on a particular saint...I like so many of them. I like other names too...like Holy Spirit or Good Shepard, but either my husband or son would always do a little frown when I said those. I don't know why. I guess they just didn't sound right to them. So, no more 3 pigs in a barn home academy! Its All Saints. I like it. I can't wait to make our ID cards!

Here is a good site for ID cards: http://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/

It's Homeschool Buyers Co-Op. It is a FREE group to join and they arrange group discounts through curriculum companies and general school supplies (e.g. microscopes). You can also use their template to make your own teacher and student ID cards.

CSN Stores Review

Awhile back the nice folks at CSN stores gave me a gift certificate to give away on my blog. Now, they have been nice enough to ask me to review a product of my choice. Wow! They have soooo much to choose from. I just can't decide. They have everything from children's backpacks to bedroom furniture.

I have a new house so there are all kinds of things I need/want.

I could be a nice mom/teacher and get my son a graphing calcultor for algebra next year.

Or I could get a nice butter dish. I've been needing one of these. Now that we have a bigger house I plan to entertain more.

Or instead of the butter dish I could get the butter crock. I have a butter churn and we like to churn our own butter. This would be a nice way to serve it.

Or I could get a fun, new toy for my cat. :)

Or some vaccuum storage bags for that extra bedding.

Or a chiminea for the patio.

Or many other things. I just can't decide!

What would you get?

I'll be posting my review of the product I finally decide on after I get it.

Now, off to shop!

Postcard Friendship Friday #61

Yay! I'm participating in Postcard Friendship Friday again. My month of October was sooooo busy. I had 3 parties that I was coordinating on 3 different Saturdays so my Fridays were too busy to blog. :(

My scanner has also had issues. Its wireless, but constantly loses the wireless connection so I've now moved it next to the computer so it can stay plugged in all the time.

Ok. enough about all that. Here is a postcard of Paris that my friend in France sent me. I think its just beautiful. I'd love to go there one day! Its suppose to say Paris at the bottom, but the scanner didn't pick it up because it had a white boarder. Again, I have some issues with my new scanner/printer.

Wordful Wednesday

My kids had a great time this Halloween. Nathan dressed as Huck Finn and Claire as Tinkerbelle. I told them I was so proud that they were both literary characters! :)

First Halloween at the new house. We did a little decorating, but I hope to do more next year. Our All Saints party was the day before and Claire had a birthday party the afternoon of Halloween so I didn't have much time this year.

The kids are quite pleased with the loot they got from the new neighborhood! In Nathan's words, "Its all good candy, no junk candy!"

Hip Homeschool Hop: School Names

The Hip Homeschool Hop is hosted by The Homeschool Chick.

I've been trying to think of a name for our homeschool. I've wanted to do this for years, but just never could settle on anything. I want to make ID cards and include the name so I've been asking around to see what others have named their homeschools. Lots of people use Saint names. I just can't decide.

I asked the kids. Nathan wanted something like "Revelations home school ". Because he is a 12 year old boy and revelations is his favorite book of the bible!
Claire wanted to call us the Lake Arlington Lakers because we live near Lake Arlington. :)
Neither choice was what I was looking for. :)

Sunday morning we were running late for church because the kids were arguing over the bathroom. They were quite grumpy at breakfast too. Claire's bangs were crazy from the way she slept on them so I sent the others to the car and took her to comb them down with some water. We finally all got in the car and were off to church. On the way I mention the school naming thing to my husband. His response after that hectic morning? "Why don't you call it St. Jude's school of lost causes?" Ok. that gave us all a good laugh, but still didn't help me find a name!

I thought and thought about it in church. We were praying the holy spirit novena so I thought that might be good either in English or Latin. I also thought about Blessed Mother Home Academy. I told them I liked "home academy". So, on the way home from church Claire (who likes to just spout out things that don't make sense) says, "I know, you could call it 3 pigs in a barn!" Really, Claire??? Well, I had forgotton about her strange suggestion until I walked into the school room yesterday morning. Look what Nathan had written on the board...

I better name our school quick or this is going to stick!

If you homeschool do you have a name for your school?

All Saints Day

Today is All Saints Day. Our homeschool group has an All Saints Party every year. Since All Saints fell on a Monday we had our party on Saturday. Nathan dressed as John the Baptist and Claire dressed as Blessed Kateri Tekawitha.

The kids play saintly games and have lots of fun!

Some of the games we have are:

St. Peter's Fishing game, St. Anthony's Lost and found, St. Helena's Search for the true cross, St. Nicholas' coin toss, St. Brendan the Navigator's Spin & Win, Choirs of Angels halo toss, St. Therese's Little Flower Toss, St. Francis' Duck Pond, and a few that I'm sure I'm leaving out. They play saintly bingo at the end. If anyone has anymore game ideas for saints I'd love to hear them. I'm always looking to add something new.

We also have a holy lantern carving contest where we carve religious scenes or symbols into a pumpkin. Nathan didn't want to do one this year, but Claire did. Here is her entry:

The party is really cute. The kids are all so cute dressed as little saints!
