Happy Birthday Poe!...Wordful Wednesday

January 19th...the birthday of the greatest American writer! It also happens to be my birthday, but I haven't had a great influence on American literature so I'm going to post about my favorite writer of all times instead. :)

Here are a few great Poe quotes:

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.
Edgar Allan Poe

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
Edgar Allan Poe

Experience has shown, and a true philosophy will always show, that a vast, perhaps the larger portion of the truth arises from the seemingly irrelevant.
Edgar Allan Poe

I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allan Poe

I would define, in brief, the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of Beauty.
Edgar Allan Poe

If you wish to forget anything on the spot, make a note that this thing is to be remembered.
Edgar Allan Poe

Here is the link to the Poe museum. I would love to visit this one day!!

And here is my favorite Poe poem. I remember memorizing this in the 5th grade for some poetry reading competition. I also used it in my poetry notebook in 6th grade, of course, as my favorite poem!

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do! I don't know why I've always loved Poe. I guess I'm drawn to the dark, mysterious works. I can even remember watching The Fall of the House of Usher on TV when I was in the 2nd grade, I think. Now, I really don't recommend that movie for 2nd graders!! My parents were a little too lenient with our TV watching! Anyway, I've always thought it was cool that my birthday was on the same day as his. So, each year I always read a little Poe on that day!

Do you have a favorite Poe story or poem?

wordful wednesday is hosted by Parenting by Dummies and Seven Clown Circus.
