Happy Birthday Poe!

Today is Edgar Allan Poe's Birthday. Poe is my favorite writer of all time and I think its really cool that we share a birthday! I think I might just start ignoring mine and just celebrating his!

"Here are a few good Poe quotes. Enjoy!

"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity. "

"I would define, in brief, the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of Beauty. "

"If you wish to forget anything on the spot, make a note that this thing is to be remembered."

"All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream."

"We loved with a love that was more than love. "

You can help kids and win a prize!

A few weeks ago I joined a group called Mom select. I got an email from them today telling me about a campaign by Frigidare to help children living in poverty. I was invited to post about this on my blog. Basically, you visit this link: www.MakeTimeForChange.com and click on their wheel to spin. You are then registered in a drawing for the prize you land on as well as a Frigiare Affinity Washer and Dryer.

This is from the email they sent me:

The folks at Frigidaire know that even though the holidays have come and gone, we're all committed to finding ways to keep the spirit of charitable giving going in the new year. That's why Frigidaire and Jennifer Garner are teaming up once again to support Save the Children's U.S. Programs, dedicated to helping children living in poverty in the United States.
Their new Spin & Win game gives you the opportunity to win gift cards for spending quality time with your tykes - whether it's curling up with some new books, starting a craft project or taking in a family flick. They're giving away a prize every day. Plus, you could also win a brand new Frigidaire Affinity washer and dryer, with time-saving features that give you more time for the important things in life. Best of all, every time you play, Frigidaire will donate $1 to Save the Children, as part of their $250,000 commitment to support Save the Children's CHANGE program, dedicated to providing nutritious snacks and promoting healthier lifestyles for children living in poverty in the United States

I played today! How 'bout you?

Postcard Friendship Friday #39

Welcome to another Postcard Friendship Friday hosted by Marie at The French Factrice . Stop by her site to join in or see other postcards.

This is a postcard of the Hudspeth House B&B near Amarillo, TX. My husband and I stayed here a couple times when we were first married. The first time we stayed they were still not finished renovating some of the rooms, but they were having a little contest to name the rooms. The room we stayed in was very 20s in style so we submitted a few names that reminded us of that decade. We actually won a free night's stay for one of our suggestions..."The Prohibition Room". Apparantly, one of the rooms they were still renovating had some very interesting things hidden in a wall when they tore into it! Liquor bottles, I think cigarettes, and a couple of other things. I can't remember all of it now. Anyway, they used our name, "The Prohibition Room" for that room since someone was obviously hiding forbidden things in its walls!

Wordless Wednesday turned Wordful Wednesday!

Normally, I do a Wordless Wednesday post, but today it has turned into Wordful Wednesday because I just have to tell the story that goes along with this picture!

Claire's assignment for science was to examine dirt with a magnifying glass. I got her some dirt out of my garden and she found an earthworm in it. She was thrilled and, being the little girly girl that she is, decided she wanted to keep it as a pet. I said no, of course. She played with it for a while. She would giggle when it moved and she thought it was making letters and numbers out of its body! She named it Professor Wormy doodle something or another...I don't know. She kept changing the name every 2 minutes! She also wanted it to stay and live in the house. She said it told her it wanted my room! She also wanted me to make it a sweater! Where does she get these ideas??? Anyway, we all had a good laugh. Claire brings such silliness to our family. I love it. I snapped this picture before she took it back out to the garden. Yes, she finally did put that poor thing back!

Funniness aside, this little occurance made me so grateful for homeschooling. Not only did I get to share in her activity and the joy she felt finding the worm, I also did a little impromtu lesson on earthworms. Claire, for reasons unknown to me, said its a girl and a boy. Nathan said that was impossible. So, then they got to learn that, in fact, Claire was kind of right. Earthworms have both male and female reproductive organs. Nathan just could not believe that! So, a simple little activity about looking at soil turned out to be even more educational than I'm sure the text book authors planned. It also provided some comic relief to our school day!

Catching up

Gosh, I just don't seem to have time to blog anymore. I always think about things I want to post, but then I never get the time to post them. I'm stealing a few minutes right now in between art classes and right before I have to go make the kids' lunch. So here's a little of what we've been up to lately:

Random updat #1: We had our first homeschool science fair this last weekend. We had a small, but good turnout and I think it was successful. Hopefully, we can continue to have them. I think the kids really learn a lot doing their projects.

Random update #2:
I had lost my watch the weekend after Christmas. It was my Mickey Mouse watch that my husband bought me at Disney World. It was a really sweet, spontaeous gift so the watch was special to me. I remembered picking it up off the bookcase in the living room to put it away, but that was the last time I saw it. It was missing for about 2 weeks. I was so bummed. I turned the house upside down looking for it. Then, I found it a couple of nights ago! It was in the pocket of my robe! Apparantly, I got sidetracked when going to put it away (imagine that!) and stuck it in the pocket. I don't wear the robe very often so it was a couple weeks before I found it again. I was so happy!
Ok, I have time for only one more random update! This is from the files of funny things Claire says. She's trying to make a hot air balloon for her stuffed cat. She put her in a bucket and tied a jump rope to it and it trying to launch it off the landing of the stairs. Well, a little while ago I hear her softly repeating "help" "help". I thought she was playing, but after a while I decided to ask what she was doing. (I know, good mom, right? Wait 5 minutes if they're still calling for help then go check it out!) Anyway, her reply? "Technical Difficulties." How funny is that? I had to go rescue the stuffed cat because she didn't want to drop her down to the floor!
Ok, now I feel better that I have actually posted on my blog! Now, I'm off to make lunch so we can eat really quick and head back out to Nathan's art class.

This is a postcard my sister-in-law sent my daughter from Eureka, California. I think its just beautiful! The house is called the "Pink Lady". The back of the card says: The Pink Lady was built as a wedding present from William Carson, the builder for his son Milton in 1889
