This is a postcard my grandfather sent me back in the early 80s. I posted one of the Vegas ones from this trip last week. My grandparents drove from S. Texas to New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada all in one trip, sending postcards along the way! I thought this one was really interesting because it shows one cowboy lighting a cigarette for the other. (I don't know how well that comes across on the smaller picture on the blog.) I was about 5 or 6 when this was sent to me. I couldn't imagine sending a postcard with people smoking to a 5 or 6 yr. old today! It's funny. Back then a lot of people smoked...tv characters, cartoons, you name it. I remember seeing magazine ads and billboards for cigarettes. I also remember those old cigarette vending machines everywhere. No one in my family smoked, but we still had ashtrays in our living room because so many people we knew smoked. I'm glad times have changed and smoking is not as glorified as it used to be! I couldn't imagine having an ashtray in my house for guests now! It is funny to look back and think about how things were, though. It also makes me feel a little old that I'm remembering "how things used to be" 25 years ago!

Howdy from Flavor Country. I love it!
I wonder how many other places this postcard was "from."
Well I'm old right with you! This is actually quite a thought provoking post. Now I'm mining through my memory. I remember too how every table in a restaurant would have an ashtray. I even made an ashtray for my Mom in school once even though she didn't smoke!
That's the same in our country, Aimée.
You^postcard reminds me of a kind of very famous comics here in France. Up to 70's the heroe who is a cowboy was drawed with a cigarette. Then, a law forbade this, and instead of a cigarette, the cartoonist gave him a long blade of grass in his mouth. 30 years ago. I feel older than you, now ; )
Have a nice week-end and an Happy Easter.
BEautiful postcard even i not support smoking habit.
I think this is the first cowboy postcard I've seen so far! I love it! We in Asia, or at least in the Philippines, often equate cowboys with the cigarette brand Marlboro. Thanks for visiting mine earlier :)

I can so relate to what you say in this post, and the memories of past advertising... I Love the word "Howdy", and that's what drew my eye to this image first...
Thanks for stopping by for a visit, and for your kind comments... I hope your Easter is filled with lots of Chocolate...
